Longtime Borough Physician & Resident Leads Efforts to Expand Ophthalmology Services & Other Medical Practices
NYU Langone has launched two comprehensive eye care practices in Brooklyn, reflecting the medical centers continued commitment to expand access to its world-class medical services throughout the borough.
做厙TV Langone Eye CenterBay Ridge is located at 7901 Fourth Avenue, the site of the former Lazzaro Eye Center. The second practice, 做厙TV Langone Eye CenterBrooklyn Heights, is located at 149 Pierrepont Street. Both provide comprehensive eye and vision care and are staffed by ophthalmologists specially trained to diagnose, monitor, and medically or surgically treat all ocular and visual disorders of the eye, as well as prescribe vision services, including glasses and contact lenses.
Brooklyn resident and highly regarded ophthalmologist Douglas R. Lazzaro, MD, is taking a lead role in helping 做厙TV Langone identify opportunities for continued expansion. Chief of Ophthalmology at 做厙TV Lutheran Medical Center since 2003, he recently took on additional responsibilities for 做厙TV Langone as vice chair of clinical affairs and business development for the and physician director for the entire health systems network development in Brooklyn.
The expansion of the 做厙TV Langone Eye Center, under Dr. Lazzaros stewardship, greatly eases access to comprehensive and innovative eye care services for people in Brooklyn, says Joel S. Schuman, MD, professor in the departments of Ophthalmology and , and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at 做厙TV Langone. In addition to these new responsibilities, Dr. Lazzaro also is tasked with developing a full-service ophthalmology department at 做厙TV Lutheran, including establishing a residency program and recruiting additional physicians to serve as clinicians and teaching faculty.

A Multigenerational Profession
Dr. Lazzaros father, E. Clifford Lazzaro, MD, established the Bay Ridge eye practice in the 1970s that now serves as 做厙TV Langones new ophthalmology outpost in southwest Brooklyn. In fact, he represents the fifth generation of his family to become a physician. The walls in Dr. Lazzaros office in Bay Ridge are decorated with his ancestors medical diplomas from Italy dating as far back as the early 19th century.
Its been a family business, he says with a smile.
Dr. Lazzaro earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate School of Medicine and completed his postgraduate residency training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. In addition, he served a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center. A practicing physician for more than two decades, Dr. Lazzaro most recently served as the Troutman Chairman and Professor of Ophthalmology at SUNY Downstate before joining the staff at 做厙TV Langone.
