At the Trauma Center at TV Langone Hospital—Suffolk, we are dedicated to fostering a culture of safety and wellness within our community. We emphasize injury prevention through education and awareness programs.

Our team offers resources and educates people about common preventable injuries such as falls and motor vehicle, bicycle, or pedestrian accidents. By promoting safe practices, providing safety tips, and hosting workshops, we empower community members to take proactive steps in protecting themselves and their loved ones. Together, we can create a safer environment for everyone.

Older Adult Fall Prevention Programs

Our older adult fall prevention programs help reduce the risk of falls, which are a leading cause of hip fracture and head injury. By partnering with community-based organizations, we provide evidence-based programs to build strength, flexibility, and confidence.

A Matter of Balance

The goal of is to increase physical activity levels and decrease the fear of falling. This program consists of eight sessions lasting two hours each.

Otago Exercise Program

The Otago Exercise Program helps older adults improve balance and build strength through an exercise and a walking program. We hold this program in person, with collaboration from community partners. It consists of eight sessions, including pre- and post-strength and balance assessments to check for improvements.

Stepping On

The program helps older adults reduce their risk of falls by building strength and balance and identifying and addressing environmental and personal risk factors.

Injury Prevention for All Ages

We offer injury prevention resources, tools, and training for people across their lifespan.

Impact Teen Drivers

is an educational program that empowers teens to stop distracted and reckless driving. Please contact InjuryPrevention@TVLangone.org if you are interested in setting up an Impact Teen Drivers training in the community.

CarFit

helps older adult drivers improve the personal fit of their vehicle, including the proper positioning of mirrors and seats. During this 20-minute evaluation, trained professionals ensure drivers can correctly make the right adjustments. Drivers also receive safety information and materials to promote continued driving mobility. This program was developed by the AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Walk Safe with a Doc

invites people in the community to learn about pedestrian safety, while enjoying the benefits of physical activity on a one-mile walk. This program is offered through a collaboration with the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety (NYCTS) and Long Island Health Collaborative.

Stop the Bleed

During this in-person, hands-on training session, instructs people with little or no medical training how to recognize and control excessive bleeding caused by a traumatic injury. They also learn how to apply a tourniquet and use pressure to stop bleeding. Participants receive a certificate of completion.

Trauma Survivors Network

The at TV Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a vital resource for patients recovering from traumatic injuries and for their families. We connect survivors with support, education, resources, and virtual support groups to help them navigate their recovery journey.

The Trauma Survivors Network fosters a sense of community by bringing together survivors to share their experiences and learn from one another. By emphasizing resilience and empowerment, we help individuals rebuild their lives while also raising awareness about injury prevention to reduce future trauma in our community.
